Beeline Farm is a part of a designated North Carolina Century Farm. This land has been farmed for over 100 years by the same family. Over the years various crops have been planted. Tobacco, soybeans, fescue, millet and orchard grass were a few. Our grandparents also raised registered Black Angus cattle, hogs, chickens and had a milk cow or two.
As demand changed, we had to change. Three parts of the original tract are being used in production of organic hay. The other fourth is what we are developing toward a new future. Beekeeping has been introduced, thus the name Beeline Farm. There are currently seven hives on the property and one off site. Their activity continues to captivate the younger generation of the clan. Blueberries have also been introduced this year. We hope our first crop of blueberries will be ready in 2010 and our first honey wil be harvested this summer.
Our teenage farmer is using both these endeavors as a project for her AgriScience class this year. There is also interest from the younger member of the family to follow in his parents footsteps. It is just the "work" part that seems to be giving him some trouble; but as he matures, we are sure that he will love the production part just as much as we do.
